Research Techniques Facility Workshop is an outreach program for highly motivated students from new Manhattan/Hunter Science High School.
The main objectives of the workshop are
1) to teach basic lab techniques, to give familiarity with lab equipment and to prepare students to work in a lab
2) to educate about modern biomedical research techniques
3) to give students an early college experience
Objective# 1: Basic Laboratory Skills
Students will complete the following modules under the supervision of a RTF instructor.
1) Keeping a lab notebook
2) Lab safety
3) Types of labware
4) Catalogs, companies, and ordering
5) Weighing with a balance
6) Water quality
7) Measuring volumes
8) Making chemical solutions
9) Stock solutions, and dilution
10) Using a pH meter; Buffer solution
11) Using a spectrophotometer
12) Using a centrifuge
13) Using a phase contrast microscope
14) Using animals in research
15) Aseptic technique
16) Electrophoresis
17) Computer use/ online literature search
Objective# 2: Modern Biomedical Research Techniques
Students will be assigned to do PowerPoint presentation and Web Publication Tasks on topics related to biotechnology and biomedical sciences.
Suggested PowerPoint topics are Gene knock down, Gene knock in/ out, Immunofluorescence Labeling, Gel electrophoresis, DNA fingerprinting, Therapeutic cloning, PCR, RT-PCR, Bioinformatics, Immunoprecipitation assay, Microarray, Microscopy, Chromatography, Cell and tissue culture.
For Web Publishing, students will do a research on their favorite animal model system (lab animal), and favorite protein or gene and discuss the content in a scientific manner. No previous web publishing knowledge is required.
Objective# 3: Hands-on Research Experience
Five students each year will be selected to do an internship in the state-of-the-art, Hunter faculty's research labs, over the summer. The internship will last about six weeks, starting from approximately July 5th.
